Description

This authentic 1966 British Gold Sovereign, struck at the Royal Mint during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, represents one of the most iconic and widely recognized gold coins in world numismatics.

Obverse:

Laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Mary Gillick, surrounded by the legend:

ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D:

(Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith)

This elegant portrait marked the early years of Elizabeth II’s reign and is admired for its refined and timeless style.

Reverse:

The legendary scene of Saint George slaying the Dragon, masterfully engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, one of the most celebrated engravers in numismatic history. Saint George is shown on horseback, rearing right, striking the dragon below—an enduring symbol of courage, virtue, and triumph of good over evil.

The date 1966 and the initials B.P. appear in the exergue.

Mounting & Presentation

The gold sovereign is mounted as a pendant in a custom-made 925 sterling silver frame, plated with 14k gold. The openwork design enhances the coin’s brilliance while securely holding the piece, creating a refined balance between luxury, durability, and historical authenticity.

This setting transforms a classic investment coin into an elegant and wearable statement piece, suitable for both collectors and fine jewelry enthusiasts.

Historical & Symbolic Significance

The Gold Sovereign has served for centuries as a symbol of British power, stability, and craftsmanship. The Saint George and the Dragon motif, introduced in the early 19th century, remains one of the most powerful allegories in Western iconography—representing bravery, protection, and moral victory.

The 1966 sovereign belongs to a period when gold sovereigns were struck primarily for investment and international trade, continuing a tradition that spans over 200 years.
