Roman Empire – Domitian – AR Denarius, AD 92/93 – Rome

A Silver Denarius of Domitian with Minerva

Struck at the Rome mint in AD 92/93, this silver denarius belongs to the later coinage of Domitian, Roman emperor from AD 81 to 96.

The obverse features a laureate portrait of Domitian facing right, surrounded by his imperial titles. The portrait is well defined and gives the coin strong visual appeal despite some weakness in parts of the surrounding legend.

The reverse depicts Minerva, one of the most frequently represented deities on Domitian’s coinage. She stands left, wearing a long crested helmet and holding a thunderbolt and spear, with a grounded shield beside her.

The coin displays a light silver-grey tone and an attractive portrait. Some weakness of strike and areas of encrustation are present, particularly in parts of the legends and fields.
