Roman Empire – Domitian – AR Denarius, AD 92/93 – Rome
A Silver Denarius of Domitian with Minerva
Struck at Rome in AD 92/93, this silver denarius was issued during the later years of the reign of Domitian, emperor from AD 81 to 96.
The obverse bears a strong laureate portrait of Domitian facing right, surrounded by his imperial titles.
The reverse depicts Minerva, one of the emperor’s favoured deities, standing left in a long crested helmet. She holds a thunderbolt and spear, with a grounded shield beside her. Minerva appears repeatedly on Domitian’s silver coinage and became one of the most characteristic reverse types of his reign.
The coin retains a light silver-grey tone and an attractive portrait. Some weakness of strike and areas of encrustation are present, but the principal devices remain clearly visible.
