AE Drachm – Alexandria Mint

41 mm | 68.69 g

An extraordinary and massive bronze drachm struck in Alexandria under Ptolemy IV Philopator, one of the powerful Hellenistic rulers of Egypt.

This impressive “Sixty” denomination weighs nearly 69 grams and measures an outstanding 41 mm in diameter — a true statement piece of ancient monetary power. Large Ptolemaic bronzes are highly sought after for their commanding presence and bold, sculptural artistry.

The obverse depicts Zeus-Ammon, wearing a royal diadem — a striking fusion of Greek and Egyptian religious traditions symbolizing divine kingship. On the reverse, the iconic eagle stands proudly on a thunderbolt, accompanied by a cornucopia, emblem of prosperity and royal abundance. The legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ firmly asserts the authority of King Ptolemy.

The coin displays a beautiful dark brown patina with strong relief and excellent eye appeal.
