Description

Ancient bronze coin struck at Amisos in Pontus during the reign of Mithradates VI Eupator (circa 85–65 BC), one of the most powerful rulers of the Hellenistic world and a formidable opponent of Rome during the Mithridatic Wars.

Obverse

Aegis facing.

The aegis, traditionally associated with Zeus and Athena, appears as a protective emblem symbolizing divine power and protection. This type reflects the strong Hellenistic artistic tradition that influenced the coinage of the Pontic kingdom.

Reverse

AMI-ΣOY

Nike walking right, holding a palm branch tied with a fillet over her left shoulder; monograms on each side.

Nike, the personification of victory, was a common motif in Hellenistic coinage and symbolized military success and divine favor—an appropriate theme for the reign of Mithradates VI, who spent much of his rule in conflict with Rome.

Historical Context

Mithradates VI Eupator ruled the Kingdom of Pontus from 120 to 63 BC and became famous for his prolonged resistance against Roman expansion during the Mithridatic Wars.

His coinage combines Greek mythological symbolism with royal propaganda, reflecting the cultural connections between the Black Sea region and the wider Hellenistic world.

Coins from Amisos, an important coastal city on the Black Sea, are among the most recognizable bronze issues of the Pontic kingdom.
