Description

•Obverse: Depicts the Persian king in a kneeling-running stance facing right, holding a spear and a bow, with a quiver slung over his shoulder. This dynamic posture symbolizes strength, readiness for battle, and the empire’s military dominance.

•Reverse: Features an incuse rectangular punch, a characteristic mark of Achaemenid coinage, serving as an authentication stamp rather than a detailed design.

Historical Context

The siglos was the standard silver denomination of the Achaemenid monetary system, primarily used for military payments and trade. Unlike Greek coinage, which often featured city emblems or deities, Achaemenid coins consistently depicted the Great King, reinforcing his divine and political authority across the vast empire.

Sardes, the capital of Lydia, was a crucial economic hub within the Persian Empire and one of the first places where coinage was invented. Under Persian control, it continued to serve as a major minting center, producing these sigloi for over a century.

This coin is a remarkable artifact from one of history’s most powerful empires, offering a glimpse into Persian artistry, economy, and imperial ideology.
