Historical Context

This coin was issued during the rule of Mithradates VI Eupator, King of Pontus (c. 120–63 BC), one of the most formidable adversaries of Rome. Known as the “Poison King” for his obsession with toxicology and immunity to poisons, Mithradates sought to unite the Hellenistic East against Roman expansion.

Sinope, located on the Black Sea coast, was a strategic and wealthy port city, and served as a key mint for Mithradates’ expanding kingdom. The presence of Zeus and his eagle symbolized not only divine legitimacy, but also Mithradates’ alignment with Greek cultural identity in opposition to Roman imperialism.
