This stunning silver denarius was struck during the early years of Marcus Aurelius’ political career, when he was Caesar under the reign of his adoptive father, Emperor Antoninus Pius. It captures the promising future emperor before he rose to the imperial throne in AD 161. Marcus Aurelius would later become one of Rome’s most revered rulers, remembered not only as a capable leader but also as a philosopher, known for his timeless work, Meditations.
