Obverse: Inscription AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F — Bare-headed bust of Marcus Aurelius facing right, portrayed as a young Caesar under the reign of his adoptive father, Emperor Antoninus Pius.
Reverse: COS II — The Roman deity Honos (personification of honor) stands front-facing, head turned left, holding a branch in his right hand and a cornucopia (symbol of abundance) in his left.
This remarkable silver denarius was minted during the early years of Marcus Aurelius’s rise to power, before he became one of Rome’s most respected emperors and one of history’s greatest philosopher-kings. As Caesar under Antoninus Pius, Marcus was being groomed for rule, and coins like this reflect his early prominence and Roman virtues such as honor, discipline, and prosperity.
