Description

This authentic silver drachm was struck under Sinatrukes, ruler of the Parthian Empire between approximately 93/92 and 70/69 BC. The Parthian Kingdom was one of Rome’s most powerful eastern rivals and a dominant force across Mesopotamia and Iran.

The coin reflects the distinctive artistic and cultural identity of Parthian royal coinage, blending Hellenistic influence with Iranian traditions.

Obverse

Diademed bust of the Parthian king facing left, wearing a royal tiara or bashlyk.

The portrait is characterized by stylized features and elongated proportions typical of Parthian engravers.

The royal headgear emphasizes sovereignty and dynastic legitimacy, reinforcing the authority of the Arsacid dynasty.

Reverse

Seated archer facing right, holding bow — the iconic symbol of Parthian power.

The Greek legend typically reads:

ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΑΡΣΑΚΟΥ

(“Of the Great King Arsaces”)

The archer motif represents the nomadic and military roots of the Parthian ruling house and became the enduring emblem of the Arsacid kings.

Historical Significance

Sinatrukes ruled during a turbulent period marked by internal succession struggles and external pressures from both Rome and neighboring powers.

The Parthian Empire was Rome’s principal eastern adversary, famously defeating Roman legions at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC. Coins like this circulated across a vast territory stretching from Mesopotamia to the Iranian plateau.

Parthian drachms are historically important for their consistent royal imagery and their role in maintaining imperial identity across diverse regions.
