Silver Tetradrachm (Debased / Plated Issue)

Description

This ancient tetradrachm was struck in the name of Alexander III of Macedon, known as Alexander the Great, one of the most influential figures in world history. While standard tetradrachms of Alexander were traditionally minted in high-purity silver, this particular example belongs to a recognized category of debased or plated issues produced in antiquity.

These coins were manufactured either with a reduced silver alloy or with a silver coating over a base-metal core, while preserving the traditional weight, size, and iconography. Such practices were already known and employed in the ancient world, especially during periods of military expansion, economic pressure, or metal shortages, and were accepted in circulation alongside full-silver issues.

This coin was acquired by us already partially restored. Areas affected by corrosion—typical of debased or plated silver coinage—were previously stabilized using a conservation-grade resin. This intervention is purely preservative, intended to halt further deterioration and ensure long-term structural stability. No modern engraving or alteration of the original design has been carried out.

Historical Context

Following Alexander’s death in 323 BC, his empire fractured into competing Hellenistic kingdoms ruled by the Diadochi. Continuous warfare and the need to finance large armies led some mints to adopt debased or emergency coinage in order to maintain monetary circulation.

Coins of this type provide valuable insight into the economic realities of the Hellenistic world, illustrating how ancient states adapted their monetary systems during times of transition and instability.
