👑 Ferdinand I — The Aragonese Power in Southern Italy

Ferdinand I (Ferrante) was the first Aragonese monarch to firmly establish his dynasty over Naples after succeeding Alfonso V. His reign was marked by political intrigue, conspiracies, and constant struggles against both internal baronial revolts and foreign claimants.

Despite the challenges, Ferrante proved to be a shrewd and resilient ruler, strengthening the kingdom’s administration, economy, and military defenses. His court in Naples became a vibrant center of diplomacy, early Renaissance culture, and artistic patronage.

🪙 The Cavallo — A Classic Neapolitan Coin

Introduced originally by the Angevins, the Cavallo became one of the most iconic small-denomination coins of medieval southern Italy. Under the Aragonese, its production increased significantly to support everyday commerce.

These coins typically feature simple yet bold imagery, often including heraldic or equestrian symbols tied to the House of Aragon. While small in size, they carry important historical weight as markers of Ferrante’s consolidation of power.

A compact and charming piece of late medieval Italian history, representing the rise of the Aragonese dynasty and the dynamic political landscape of 15th-century Naples.
