A Billon Tetradrachm of Hadrian from Roman Egypt
Struck at Alexandria in regnal year 20 of Hadrian, corresponding to AD 135/136, this billon tetradrachm belongs to the distinctive provincial coinage of Roman Egypt.
The obverse presents a laureate portrait of Hadrian facing left. The portrait is attractive and well preserved, with the imperial features remaining clear despite some cleaning marks and minor surface porosity.
The reverse depicts Tyche reclining left on a lectisternium, resting her head on one hand and holding a transverse rudder. The regnal date L K appears above, indicating Hadrian’s twentieth year of rule.
The coin has a dark tone, with some lighter highlights visible on the reverse, giving the piece a pleasing contrast.
