Historical Significance
Empress Irene is one of the most remarkable figures of the Byzantine era. Initially regent for her young son Constantine VI, she later seized sole control, becoming the first woman to rule the Byzantine Empire in her own name. She is best known for ending the period of Iconoclasm by restoring the veneration of icons at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787.
Coins bearing the names of both rulers are particularly notable, reflecting the delicate balance of power between mother and son—and a unique moment in Byzantine history where a female ruler held imperial legitimacy.
