Description

This authentic Byzantine bronze follis was struck during the reign of Emperor Nicephorus II Phocas (AD 963–969), one of the most formidable military emperors of the Middle Byzantine period.

The coin reflects the powerful religious and imperial imagery that characterized 10th-century Byzantine coinage, emphasizing divine authority and sacred kingship.

Obverse

Bust of Christ Pantokrator facing forward, holding the Book of Gospels and raising His right hand in blessing.

The legend proclaims Christ as the sovereign ruler, reinforcing the Byzantine belief that imperial authority derived directly from divine will.

The strong frontal depiction of Christ is typical of the Macedonian dynasty’s spiritual iconography and represents divine protection over the empire.

Reverse

Emperor Nicephorus II standing facing, wearing military attire, holding a labarum (imperial standard) and globus cruciger.

The imagery highlights his identity as both sacred ruler and military commander.

Historical Significance

Nicephorus II Phocas was a brilliant general before becoming emperor. He successfully led campaigns against the Arabs, reclaiming Crete in AD 961 and expanding Byzantine control in the eastern Mediterranean.

Known as a stern and deeply religious ruler, he strengthened the army and fortified the empire’s eastern frontiers. His reign marked a period of military revival, though it ended dramatically with his assassination in AD 969.

Coins from his reign symbolize the fusion of faith and military power — a defining feature of the Byzantine state.
