Description

This authentic Byzantine bronze follis was struck during the reign of Emperor Maurice Tiberius (AD 582–602), one of the most significant rulers of the late 6th century Byzantine Empire.

The coin represents the mature phase of early Byzantine monetary reform, following the system established by Anastasius I, and reflects the strong imperial and religious symbolism characteristic of the period.

Obverse

Bust of Emperor Maurice Tiberius facing forward, wearing crown and military attire, often holding a globus cruciger and shield.

The imperial portrait emphasizes both sacred authority and military command — central themes of Byzantine rulership.

The frontal depiction highlights the divine legitimacy of the emperor, presented not merely as a political leader but as God’s representative on Earth.

Reverse

Large “M”, indicating the denomination of 40 nummi (Follis).

Above, a cross symbolizing Christian sovereignty.

In the exergue, the mint mark of Constantinople.

The bold and monumental letter reflects the practical reform of Byzantine bronze coinage, making denominations easily recognizable in daily commerce.

Historical Significance

Maurice Tiberius ruled during a time of military pressure on multiple fronts. He fought prolonged wars against the Sassanian Persians in the East and dealt with Slavic and Avar incursions in the Balkans.

Despite military successes and administrative competence, heavy taxation and army reforms eventually led to mutiny. In AD 602, Maurice was overthrown and executed — an event that triggered a major war between Byzantium and Persia.

Coins of Maurice Tiberius represent the final phase of relative stability before the dramatic 7th-century transformations of the Byzantine world.
