Attributed to Romanus IV Diogenes (1068–1071)

Byzantine Bronze Follis

Weight: 5.58 g

Diameter: 25 mm

Material: Bronze

Condition: Good Very Fine

Description

This authentic Byzantine bronze follis belongs to the Anonymous Series, Class G, traditionally attributed to the reign of Romanus IV Diogenes (AD 1068–1071).

Unlike earlier Byzantine coinage that prominently displayed the emperor’s portrait, the Anonymous folles emphasize Christ as the supreme ruler, reflecting the deeply theological nature of 11th-century Byzantine political ideology.

Obverse

Bust of Christ Pantokrator facing forward, holding the Book of Gospels and raising His right hand in blessing.

The inscription proclaims Christ as King of Kings, reinforcing the concept that imperial authority derived directly from divine sovereignty.

Reverse

Religious inscription arranged within a cross design, invoking the victorious power of Christ.

The absence of the emperor’s name underscores the spiritual focus of this monetary series, placing divine authority above personal imperial representation.

Historical Significance

The Anonymous folles were struck over several decades in Constantinople and represent a unique period in Byzantine numismatics where Christ replaced the emperor as the central iconographic figure.

Romanus IV ruled during a turbulent era marked by military challenges, most notably the Battle of Manzikert (1071), which had lasting consequences for Byzantine control in Anatolia.

Coins of Class G are part of this historically significant phase, reflecting both religious devotion and political instability in the late 11th century.
