Obverse

EN TOVTω NICA

Patriarchal cross crosslet with a pellet in the central globe, set upon a globe base with four steps.

To the left appears the crowned facing bust of Basil II, bearded and wearing the loros.

To the right is the crowned facing bust of Constantine VIII, beardless and wearing a chlamys.

The inscription “En toutō nika” translates as “In this sign, conquer”, a phrase associated with Emperor Constantine the Great and the Christian victory symbol.

Reverse

Legend in five lines within a triple linear border:

+ BASIL’ / C CONSTANT / PORFVROG’ / PISTOI BAS / ROMAIŌN

This inscription proclaims the emperors as the faithful rulers of the Romans, emphasizing legitimacy and divine authority.

Historical Context

Basil II, later known as “Bulgaroktonos” (the Bulgar-Slayer), was one of the most powerful emperors of the Byzantine Empire. His long reign brought military stability and territorial expansion, particularly through the defeat of the Bulgarian Empire.

Coins of this type reflect the strong religious symbolism and imperial ideology of the Middle Byzantine period. The prominent cross and Christian inscriptions reinforce the idea of divine support for imperial rule.

The miliaresion served as an important silver denomination in Byzantine commerce and ceremonial payments.

Condition

The coin presents clear central design elements with typical wear consistent with circulated Byzantine silver coinage. The inscriptions and portraits remain identifiable.

Overall condition: Good Very Fine, with attractive ancient toning.
