ANCIENT BYZANTINE EMPIRE BRONZE CROSS

(8th–10th Century AD)

Material: Bronze (Ae)

Weight: 6.5 g

Diameter: 35.6 mm

Description

This authentic Byzantine bronze cross dates to the 8th–10th century AD, a period marked by strong devotional expression and personal expressions of Christian faith within the Eastern Roman Empire.

The cross features a beautifully symmetrical design with rounded, globular terminals at the ends of each arm — a characteristic form seen in Middle Byzantine devotional pendants. The central boss adds visual balance and symbolic emphasis, representing the spiritual core of the cross.

The surface displays an attractive dark patina with natural highlights from age and handling, enhancing its sculptural presence and authenticity.

The suspension loop is broken and incomplete.

For this reason, the cross cannot be worn as a pendant and should be considered a historical artifact intended for display or collection.

Historical Context

During the 8th–10th centuries, personal bronze crosses were widely worn across the Byzantine Empire as expressions of faith and spiritual protection. These crosses were often cast in molds and worn by clergy, pilgrims, soldiers, and lay believers alike.

The rounded terminals and compact proportions reflect a devotional object designed for daily life — a tangible symbol of belief carried close to the heart.

Today, such pieces are valued both for their religious symbolism and for their connection to Byzantine material culture.
