ANCIENT BYZANTINE EMPIRE
Bronze Cross (8th–10th Century AD)
Material: Bronze (Ae)
Weight: 7.7 g
Diameter: 39.8 mm
An attractive Byzantine bronze cross dating to the middle Byzantine period (8th–10th century AD). The piece features flared, trumpet-shaped terminals and a faceted central junction, characteristic of devotional crosses produced for personal religious use in the medieval Eastern Roman Empire.
The surface shows a pleasing dark brown patina with lighter highlights on the high points, emphasizing the sculptural form and age of the piece. The overall preservation is very good for this type.
The suspension loop is broken, therefore the cross can no longer be worn as a pendant and should be considered a devotional or collectible artifact rather than a wearable item.
Such crosses were commonly worn as symbols of faith and protection, reflecting the deep spiritual culture of Byzantine society.
