About Alexander the Great
Alexander III of Macedon (356–323 BC), better known as Alexander the Great, was one of the most successful military commanders in history. Tutored by Aristotle and ascending to the throne at the age of 20, Alexander expanded his empire from Greece to Egypt and as far as the Indus Valley — an area spanning over 2 million square miles.
A master of strategy and charisma, Alexander spread Hellenistic culture, language, and influence across continents, forever altering the ancient world. His death at age 32 remains one of history’s great mysteries, but his legacy lives on through monuments, cities (like Alexandria), and coinage minted in his name long after his passing.

Historical Notes on the Coin
This drachm was minted under the rule of Antigonos I Monophthalmos, one of Alexander’s most powerful generals and a key figure among the Diadochi — the successors who divided his empire. The use of Alexander’s image and name on coinage well after his death reflects both his lasting political power and divine-like status.
The Kolophon mint, located in Ionia (modern-day Turkey), was one of the many cities that continued producing silver coinage in his honor during the early Hellenistic period.
