——
A handsome silver tetradrachm struck at Pella, shortly after the death of Alexander the Great.
Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing the lion skin of Nemea. The portrait is bold and expressive, with strong facial modeling and excellent classical style.
Reverse: Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on a throne, holding eagle and sceptre; legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Monogram in left field.
This example displays fine old cabinet toning, adding depth and character to the surfaces. The reverse shows light corrosion, consistent with the description “gutes ss” (good very fine). Overall an attractive and well-centered specimen of a highly collectible Alexander type.
The Pella issues are especially desirable due to their historical importance and strong market demand.
