Reverse:

An incuse rectangular punch, typical of early Persian silver coinage, emphasizing function and weight reliability over decorative imagery.

Historical Significance

The silver siglos was a cornerstone of the Persian monetary system and circulated widely across Asia Minor and the eastern Mediterranean. Coins of this type were used to pay soldiers, officials, and mercenaries, playing a crucial role in sustaining the largest empire the ancient world had yet seen.

Darios II ruled during a period of internal challenges and political intrigue, yet the imperial coinage remained remarkably consistent, reflecting the administrative sophistication of the Achaemenid state.
